UTOPIA, the new concert project by Ute Lemper and the delian: :quartett, is a cathartic journey, a moving portrait of a bygone era. It starts with the devastating destruction of World War I and leads through the wild and adventurous years of the Weimar Republic with its Golden Twenties to the darkest nights of the Nazi regime. The journey ends in the ruins of Berlin, but with a glimpse of a brighter world.

Ute Lemper, together with the delian: :quartett and pianist Tobias Deutschmann, brings all this to life in a stirring performance of songs from those times, specially arranged for the ensemble. Kurt Weill, Hanns Eisler, Friedrich Hollaender and Viktor Ullmann have their say; Yiddish melodies stir the soul as an echo of those lost in the ghettos; Dmitri Shostakovich’s quartet compositions comment on and reflect history – and ultimately, redemption comes in the form of a “children’s anthem” …

The juxtaposition of joyful entertainment and loss, of dream and reality, evil and hope, permeates the entire program and makes UTOPIA an experience, eternally relevant and lasting.

UTOPIA, das neue Konzertprojekt von Ute Lemper und dem delian: :quartett, ist eine kathartische Reise, das bewegende Portrait einer vergangenen Zeit. Es beginnt in den Trümmern des Ersten Weltkriegs und führt durch die wilden und abenteuerlichen Jahre der Weimarer Republik mit ihren Goldenen Zwanzigern bis in die dunkelsten Nächte des Naziregimes. All das erzählt Ute Lemper zusammen mit dem delian: :quartett und dem Pianisten Tobias Deutschmann mitreißend in Liedern der Zeit, die für das Ensemble eigens arrangiert wurden. Kurt Weill, Hanns Eisler, Friedrich Hollaender und Viktor Ullmann kommen zu Wort, jiddische Weisen rühren an als Echo der in den Ghettos Verlorenen, Quartett-Kompositionen Dmitri Shostakovichs kommentieren und reflektieren die Geschichte – und Erlösung weiß zuletzt eine „Kinderhymne“…
